Apricots are small sized plants which grow best in colder areas. These produce sweet juicy fruits which vary in size, color and taste. In Pakistan a large quantity of peaches is grown in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, KPK, Balochistan and Sindh.

Apricot Varieties:

There are almost 60 Apricot varieties being cultivated in Pakistan. Best apricot cultivars in Pakistan include Dugli, Neeli, Bedeiri, Sarbaghal (White) and NJA 13. It is said to be the fruit of cold areas, but few varieties perform well in hot areas. Apricots are have been growing in Northern areas of Pakistan for more than 1000 years. Few adaptive varieties perform well in hot areas of Punjab and Balochistan.

Soil Requirement for Apricot:

Slightly water retentive but well drained loamy soils are best for apricots. These perform well in slightly acidic to neutral soils pH ranging from 6-7. Presence of organic matter in the soil will increase the fruit production in apricots.

Apricots Plantation:

Apricots grow well in colder regions and best time for Apricot plantation is just before the start of spring. Apricots are dormant in winter so transportation and plantation is an easy task. These can be taken as bare rooted and planted in the already dug pits. For better results pits should be dug before and filled with soil mixed organic matter. It will increase the success rate of the plants. Another best time for apricot plantation is Moon soon season.

In Pakistan apricots are planted in Northern areas such as Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, KPK and some areas of Punjab and Balochistan.

Plant Canopy:        

Apricots are small tress with average height of 26 to 39 feet. It has dense lateral growth with spreading canopy. Best size of the apricot plants is achieved in orchards and big gardens. Its size will remain smaller if planted in pots. Small size of the apricot plants can be maintained in home gardens and smaller places by regular pruning.  

Fruiting:

Apricots will start fruiting between the age of 3 to 5 Years. These bloom in the month of March and April and fruits are ripe by June-August time. Fruit color changes at the time of ripening, it can be white or shades from pale yellow to deep orange. Fruit sizes and yield of the Apricot plants vary depending on age and health of plants.

Pollination:

Apricots are self-fertile so these don’t require other varieties or plants for pollination. Its flowers are not designed for wind pollination. In some cases cross pollination by insects can increase the fruit yield of the plant.
